🌍 Green transition and climate resilience in Horizon Europe calls: an interdisciplinary challenge

Climate change and environmental degradation constitute a profound and accelerating threat to Europe’s prosperity, security, and well-being. In response, the European Green Deal has set out a comprehensive roadmap to make Europe the first climate-neutral continent by 2050, while promoting sustainable economic growth, strengthening industrial competitiveness, and ensuring a fair and inclusive transition.

The European Climate Law has translated this ambition into binding commitments, including climate neutrality by 2050 and a reduction of net greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% by 2030 compared to 1990 levels.

Achieving these objectives requires systemic action across all sectors of society and the economy — from energy, mobility and industry to agriculture, food systems and the built environment. Research and innovation are essential drivers of this transformation.

Horizon Europe plays a central role by mobilising scientific excellence and innovation capacity to accelerate emissions reduction, strengthen climate resilience, restore ecosystems, and support Europe’s long-term competitiveness. The work programmes of Pillar II, together with the EU Missions and the New European Bauhaus, provide important opportunities to develop and deploy innovative solutions for the green transition.

At the same time, technological innovation alone cannot deliver the transformation required. Social behaviours, governance models, economic incentives, cultural practices and community engagement are equally important. Strong collaboration between Social Sciences & Humanities (SSH) and STEM disciplines is therefore essential for developing effective, inclusive and socially robust pathways towards climate neutrality.

🎯 What is this event about?

This brokerage event brings together researchers, innovators and stakeholders working on green transition and climate resilience topics across Horizon Europe, with a strong emphasis on interdisciplinary collaboration between SSH and STEM.

It is designed for applicants preparing proposals in areas such as health, climate and environment, energy, mobility, cities and communities, where the integration of SSH expertise can play a key role in achieving the expected outcomes.

🧭 What topics will be covered?

All 2026–2027 Horizon Europe Pillar II work programmes have been screened to identify topics where green transition and/or climate resilience play a central role and where SSH expertise is explicitly required or relevant.

A total of 13 topics have been identified.

The topics were selected according to two main criteria:

1. Green transition and/or climate resilience plays a pivotal role in the expected outcomes and/or scope of the topic.
2. The topic includes the SSH Integration requirement or explicitly refers to SSH activities, components or expertise.

The selected topics cover Clusters 1, 2, 5 and 6, the New European Bauhaus, and several EU Missions and are listed here.
